International Thespians Festival Day…..

Three, four and five???? Whoops. What happened to me doing this every day. I’ll tell you. The Day happened. Every day we’ve been out the door at 8:30 and not coming back in till midnight.Working the table, teaching workshops, going to teacher receptions, talking, talking, talking, some more talking, and did I mention the talking? My voice is about two octaves lower at this point.

Now, this is all by choice. This conference is the place to be and we want to be here. There’s not another place we can meet so many people from so many different places. I’ve met student writers, directors who’ve done our plays, students who’ve done our plays, students who’ve performed monologues at the festival, people who did my workshops this year, last year, three years ago who come by and tell me how much they enjoyed them.

We’re also having a blast putting together a video for the website and keeping up with our podcast. Oh yeah, and keeping up with the blog. It’s all good, it’s all fun, and we’re having a great time. Honestly the students could not be more enthusiastic about their love of theatre. If only we were 17 and had that energy. Where do they get that?? Does it come in a bottle?

The great story of today is that we met a teacher from California who told us about two plays she had written. Usually people describe their plays and they’re hard to picture. It’s hard to get excited. But she was the best salesman ever! One was a version of The Little Mermaid (with the REAL ending, not the Disney ending) and both Craig and I were completely jazzed over her description. She was so overjoyed to be in theatre and to share her passion with her students, it was amazing.

I also met a teacher who was using The Pregnancy Project in her classes. She talked to me about possibly using the play in her school’s health classes. The play was one of our most looked at, and sold out quickly. Who says students don’t want to be familiar with important issues?

We’re working hard, we’re so happy with our efforts and the customers we’ve met are so wonderful, if we weren’t so tired, we’d be crying.

Our Table in Lincoln

We’ve just got it all set up. Isn’t it pretty?

International Thespians Festival - Day Two

It’s hot in Nebraska. Not pleasant, gosh isn’t this sun warm kind of hot. The kind of hot that makes you feel violent. It’s that vile. Craig and I went for a run at 8:30 am , and that was too late. We only lasted 35 minutes.

I don’t know how people live here. And this is only June! Back home, a clear blue sky is something that makes you smile. It’s a feeling of comfort and happiness. Here, a clear blue sky means there’s no escape from the sun and the heat and you’re toast. Literally.

And then, you go inside somewhere and suddenly, it’s the arctic. There are icicle hanging off your nose and penguins wave as they walk by you. When we set up our table in the exhibit hall tonight, I’ll need a sweater. The two extremes are wacky loco. But, I guess if I have to choose, I choose icicles. I hate feeling vile.

International Thespians Festival - Day One

It’s actually sub day one - it’s driving day! The International Thespians Festival takes place this week in Lincoln, Nebraska. It’s a big festival for us, and the longest: 8am to 8pm (and sometimes longer) for five days straight. Lincoln is hard to fly to - you can’t get there straight and some times for some things, it’s just easier to drive. Usually we do it over two days, but this year we decided to bite the bullet and do the whole thing in one shot. Lincoln is only a 17 hour drive (only????) and driving means we don’t have to worry so much about what we bring. For example, there’s nothing like having a cooler full of cold soda at your disposal!

What we learned is that your tiredness level is about the same at the end of a 12 hour drive as it is at the end of a 17 hour drive, so you might as well do 17 hours. It all went surprisingly well. We also broke out our new video/still camera. We’re going to put together a short video about our experiences this week. I was practicing with the soft ware during the drive and learned out to make titles as well as add sound effects. I’ll be George Lucas in about 50 million years.

Tomorrow is a rest day and a adjudicators meeting. Both Craig and I are going to judge Individual Events this year - monologues for me, and duet scenes for him. Should be interesting.
