Florida Thespians is one of our longest and most satisfying relationships. Many of my premieres have happened in Florida mostly because that’s where I’ve had teachers actively interested in putting on new works. We’ve been going to the State festival for nine years and it always feels like old home week. We feel welcomed.
This year Theatrefolk was lucky to have three plays performed at the state level. Magic Fairy in the Microwave, Skid Marks: A Play About Driving, and Emotional Baggage. Skid Marks and Emotional Baggage both received straight superiors for their performance, and it looks like the teacher and cast from Emotional Baggage have the opportunity to go to the International festival in Lincoln NE to perform and present a workshop on their mask work. So exciting!
I also get the opportunity at festival to meet many students who use my work in their IE’s and have performed my plays earlier in the year. It’s one of my greatest joys to hear how excited students are to have been in my plays especially when I can’t get to see the productions.
Florida Thespians always goes by in a blur. It’s by far the biggest state festival (6600 students this year!) and it’s amazing how many student directors are there looking for plays, how many monologue books we go through, how many teachers enjoy what we do. We wouldn’t miss Florida Thespians for the world.
