Greetings from the 2012 International Thespian Festival in Lincoln Nebraska.
The kids you meet here are the future of the theatre.
We heard today from one group that were disappointed their scene wasn’t going to go on to be showcased on mainstage. But what they don’t realize that they’ve already won. By virtue of being here, they’re at the top of what they’re doing. And I hope they’re not discouraged by a perceived “failure.”
I came across this great quote from Ira Glass today. He’s the host of This American Life. Talking about starting out in a creative field, he says:
“It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
You can read the rest of the quote here. It’s worth reading.
This is a really important message and you see it in action right here at the festival. You see kids putting in the work, taking every workshop they can, seeing every show they can squeeze into their schedule. And if they keep at, they will succeed. It just takes work and time.
The kids who are here are your future Tony-winning playwrights, your favourite actors, your grandchild’s favourite teacher, set designers, that guy from that show. And those of us here will get to say we knew them when…
