I understand there was some sort of football game yesterday. So for this weeks’ Movie Monologue Monday I’m going to look at Al Pacino’s inspirational speech in Any Given Sunday.
I don’t know what to say, really.
How’s that for the opening line of a monster monologue?
The speech is ostensibly a rallying cry for a football team to come back and win the game. But the writing and performance is much deeper than that. The speech is about waaaaaaaaay much more than football. For the team it’s about winning the game, for Pacino’s character it’s about his own struggles and personal demons, for the audience it’s about grit, determination, digging in and fighting for what you want.
I’m not a big fan of music telling me how to feel. The use of music in the scene is pretty subtle though I wish there wasn’t any at all. The rises and falls of the speech are all we need in my humble opinion. But I will say this – I love that the peak of the speech isn’t driven by a swell in the music. Rather, it’s driven by the team. Their cheering voices bring the climax. It makes sense. The speech is about teamwork, not individuals. So the team should drive the swell.
