For this week’s Movie Monologue Monday, let’s look at the great and powerful (Frank) Oz in The Empire Strikes Back.
Oz is the voice and main puppeteer for the Yoda character. In the more recent Star Wars films, he’s been replaced by computer graphics. But I think that the puppetry work is much more impressive.
It’s a brief speech but it packs a wallop. It’s a powerful expression of spirituality, faith, belief in conquering your weaknesses. It eloquently sums up what many thick books try to say.
Watch it again and notice all the subtlety, his facial expressions, his movements, his peace. All of this nuance and dexterity comes from a guy doing this:
