Spread the Love: Prom Night

Lindsay and Craig spread the love for Prom Night by Sylvia Davenport-Veith.

Transcript

Hi. Welcome to Spread the Love. This week we are talking about Prom Night by Sylvia Davenport-Veith. Now the first question we get whenever anybody sees the title of this play is, “Is this the play based on the movie?” No. There is no stalking killer. There is no death. There is prom, though. The play takes place, conveniently on the night of prom. There are three characters: the prom king, the not-elected prom queen, and the geek girl. And the setting is a moonlit night in a clearing in Georgia.

Craig, what do you love about this play?

What I love about this play and where it really stands out for me is that it’s just a small, small little show. It’s not a big comedy that gets thrown in your face. It’s a small, intimate, little romantic piece that draws the audience on in. And for that reason I think it would be an excellent competition piece. Three very strong acting roles to really feature your best talent. Lindsay, what do you love about the play?

As some of you may know, I am very passionate about characters, good characters. And what Prom Night has are three beautifully imperfect characters. They all have great flaws. The prom queen gets drunk when she’s not voted prom queen, it’s so terrible for her. The prom king has all these expectations that he has to live up to and he doesn’t want to. The geek girl’s mother rents a date for her when she can’t get one. I love imperfect characters. That’s what makes them so real and that’s what makes this play a real winner. Do you have a Theatrefolk play that you love? Send us a video and we’ll put it up on our website.
