Character Analysis - Part 2
Created by Matt Webster
The Drama Two Curriculum has been developed to expand and deepen students’ skills as artists. In this unit, students will explore character analysis, which is key to developing three-dimensional characters in monologues, scenes, and plays. Part 2 takes everything students have learned in Part 1 and applies it to an existing scene. Students will work in pairs or groups to analyze their characters, block and rehearse their scenes, and present a fully memorized piece in front of the class.
-
1Lesson 1Script AnalysisStudents will begin their staging journey through script analysis. They will read the scene, identify some general knowledge that will help them play the scene, and do a close reading of their scene.
-
2Lesson 2Scoring, Beats and Action WordsStudents will score their scene and identify the beats and action words, and then they will start to physicalize their analysis. This is a review lesson as they learned about scoring in Part 1.
-
3Lesson 3Character PhysicalizationStudents will continue working on staging techniques by exploring character physicality.
-
4Lesson 4Memorization TechniquesThis session will focus on practicing a variety of memorization techniques.
-
5Lesson 5Purposeful ActionStudents will review their blocking choices with a specific objective of making every action in the scene purposeful and theatrical.
-
6Lesson 6Feedback SessionIn this class, they are going to present their scenes in front of multiple groups and receive their feedback. They will then review their feedback and decide on what changes they’ll make to their scenes.
-
7Lesson 7Final RehearsalThis is it! The final rehearsal before students perform. Students focus on getting those last few lines word perfect, do final run-throughs, and reflect on the rehearsal process.
-
8Lesson 8Performing the SceneStudents perform their scenes and complete a post-performance reflection.
