In this real world application lesson students view videos of a theatre profession, complete viewing quizzes, and hand in a Reflection.

In this lesson, students will analyze and stage a scene from a Victorian ghost story using only low-tech solutions. They must design lighting, sound, and costumes without traditional theatrical equipment or period-accurate attire. Instead, they will rely on atmosphere, found lighting, and live sound effects to bring the genre to life. Students will have two days to prepare and execute a one-minute memorized scene that showcases their design choices. Use this lesson at the end of the year, after a major assessment, or following a year-end/semester-end production.

In this lesson, students will watch a movie musical, respond to viewing questions, and apply themes and contexts from the musical in a post-viewing activity. In this ELP, students reflect and respond to a variety of questions and statements about the Theatre. The aim of the lesson is to have students identify statements they connect to and express their point of view on those statements.

The speech is a great gateway to teach students about how to write a monologue. Use this lesson to identify the similarities between a speech and a monologue. Students will analyze a speech, identify what makes a good speech, and learn that the same qualities apply when it comes to writing a good monologue. They will write their own speech in pairs, and adapt their speech into a monologue.

Use this lesson plan to introduce students to the act of reading aloud in a theatrical manner. Reader's Theatre emphasizes the sound of a piece as it has no costume, sets, blocking, or even memorization of lines. But that doesn't mean the reading is static - students will learn and practice how to incorporate volume, tone, pace, emphasis into a reading as a class, and then as a group assignment.

Students will work on their critical thinking skills through close reading. Teachers will first model the technique with a sentence, students will practice the technique in groups and then apply their knowledge with a close reading of a monologue. This lesson comes with an individual assignment and close reading handout.

Students will receive an introduction to neutral mask and explore the importance of the body as a communication medium. Students participate in three exercises that explore neutral mask: Reflecting emotion through the body, Reacting to music, and a short mime that combines an emotion and a household chore. Students will write a short reflection after the activities are completed.

Students will revisit character physicality choices and solidify that they are a part of their staging. Additionally, there are some exercises to further explore character physicality. Encourage students to continue to visualize and practice bringing characters to life as they work on their scene.

Students have been through their scene multiple times with specific blocking choices. They have been working on memorization and character physicality. In their rehearsal today, students will review their blocking choices with a specific objective of making every action in the scene purposeful and theatrical.

There isn’t a lot of information about the theatre of Ancient Egypt, but there’s certainly enough to know they performed stories. We will look at the theatre of Ancient Egypt, discuss if the elements did in fact represent theatre as we know it, and, using learned elements, perform an Ancient Egypt myth.

Students will take their script analysis work with beats and action words and apply it to their scene. Students will also start to think about how they will have to adapt staging to a virtual environment.

The rehearsal period is coming to a close, and it’s almost time to present. In this rehearsal, students will share their scene with another group with the specific focus of examining it for actor-driven movement rather than character-driven movement: shuffling your weight back and forth between your feet, playing with your hair, vaguely gesturing with your hands, etc.

We will look at Sanskrit drama over two class periods, starting with a background introduction and then exploring elements of the sanskrit drama how-to manual, the Nāṭya Śāstra, and applying knowledge through scene work.
