MMMBETH Wins Regional Drama Festival!

This was passed to us by Louise Kearley from Mount Pearl Senior High School in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. Congrats to everyone involved!

MMMBETH WINS REGIONAL DRAMA FESTIVAL! (St. John’s, Newfoundland)

On April 22nd, the drama club from Mount Pearl Senior High School competed in the Avalon East Regional High School Drama Festival at the Reid Theater, Memorial University. The four-day festival features professional workshops by day and performances from junior and senior high schools each evening. While the level of talent in the St. John’s area is incredibly high, the spirit of the festival is one of camaraderie and shared celebration of theatre.

Mount Pearl performed on opening night with their farce, Mmmbeth, a playful parody of Macbeth packed with puns, slapstick, kilts, chainsaws, and inflatable palm trees. The audience responded with wild applause and a standing ovation. By week’s end, the play was named Best Production of the Festival.

This win advanced the group to the Provincial High School Drama Festival in Carbonear, where ten schools from across Newfoundland and Labrador showcased their work. Performing at the Sheila NaGeira Theater, the students once again impressed audiences and added more awards to their growing list.

The success was well-earned. Students devoted an average of nine hours per week to rehearsals while balancing school and work commitments. In the final days before the regional performance, they logged 15 to 20 additional hours perfecting every detail. Their dedication paid off with outstanding performances at both festivals.

On May 14th, the group received the Youth Performing Arts Group Recognition Award at the City of Mount Pearl’s Focus On Youth Awards, a meaningful acknowledgment of their hard work and impact in the community.

We couldn’t be more proud of their commitment, teamwork, and talent.
