Unit
The Crucible Unit
Created by Lindsay Price
This is a research, read, discuss, and apply theatrical literature unit. Students will study the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller.
The Crucible is Miller’s most produced play. There are hundreds of high school productions each year, and the play is in many high school curricula. As with every Miller work, there is much to discuss and many rich themes to explore.
The unit is divided into three sections. Each section is a complete set of lessons. You can choose to do all three sections, or if you have your own way to teach the play, you can pick and choose exercises.

The overview sets out the objective for the unit, and describes the three-part format, with options for customization. Timeline, materials, outline and assessment breakdown is also provided.
-
1Lesson 1What's in a Name? This lesson plan is designed as a pre-study exercise before a unit on The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Students will discuss and dramatize questions surrounding a person’s “name” or reputation.
-
2Lesson 2Introduction and AllegoryIn this lesson, students will be introduced to The Crucible. They will examine and discuss a fact sheet on the play and explore allegory.
-
3Lesson 3Researching the World of the PlayIn this lesson, students will learn about the various background elements for The Crucible through readings and research. Students will then infer, based on what they’ve learned, what is going to happen in the play.
-
4Lesson 4Exploring Act 1Students will read, analyze, and discuss Act 1 of The Crucible. They will then visualize and dramatize the ideas of Act 1.
-
5Lesson 5Exploring Act 2Students will read, analyze, and discuss Act 2 of The Crucible. They will then visualize and dramatize the ideas of Act 2.
-
6Lesson 6Exploring Act 3Students will read, analyze, and discuss Act 3 of The Crucible. They will then visualize and dramatize the ideas of Act 3.
-
7Lesson 7Exploring Act 4Students will read, analyze and discuss Act 4 of The Crucible. They will then visualize and dramatize the ideas of Act 4.
-
8Lesson 8Culminating Projects and ReflectionStudents will apply what they have learned through a creative project.
